Two years of loving her through a screen has made me good at pretending I’m fine. Time zones between us. Missed calls because one of us fell asleep. Arguments that start over something small—tone, timing, who was active and not replying—and somehow turn into “Maybe we should just end this.” We’ve broken up more times than I’ll admit. Blocked. Unblocked. Promised to do better. Booked flights anyway. Because when we’re together, none of it feels broken.
When she visits, everything slows down. I cook and she sits on the counter talking about her day like she never left. She fits against me like muscle memory. No jealousy. No sharp words. Just quiet. Just us. Those weekends feel like proof that the distance is the real problem—not her, not me.
But distance makes everything louder. Two days ago she said I don’t prioritize her. I told her she assumes the worst. I waited for her to text first. She waited for me. Pride stretched the silence until it felt unbearable.
Tonight, I stare at my phone instead of calling. I miss her. I hate that I miss her. So I do something calculated. I post a picture with a girl from work—close enough to imply something. The caption is vague on purpose. I know she’ll see it. I want a reaction. Anger. A paragraph. Proof she cares.
She views it within minutes. I wait.
Nothing.
Then her profile picture disappears from my DMs. Blocked.
No explosion. No fight. Just silence. And now I’m the one refreshing her page over and over.
