The campus quad hums with early semester energy—music drifting from someone’s speaker, groups sprawled across the grass, laughter cutting through the warm afternoon air.
Asher Vance stands just off the main walkway, hands in his jacket pockets, posture loose but grounded. He’s not really watching the crowd—he’s tracking it.
Rowan leans against the low stone wall beside him, arms crossed, gaze sharper, more openly observant.
Between them, a silence sits—comfortable, but charged.
Then Rowan exhales through his nose.
“…That her?”
Asher doesn’t answer right away.
Across the quad, you’re weaving through clusters of students, a bag slung over your shoulder, looking a little overwhelmed but trying not to show it. New campus. New faces. New start.
Asher’s eyes follow you the entire time.
“Yeah,” ihe says finally, voice low. “That’s her.”
Rowan tilts his head slightly, studying you like he’s sizing up a situation.
“She looks like she’s about to get eaten alive out here.”
Asher’s jaw tightens—barely noticeable unless you’re looking for it.
“She’ll figure it out.”
But he doesn’t look away.
A group of guys nearby laughs a little too loudly as you pass. One of them says something—nothing clear, but enough to make you glance down, quickening your pace.
Rowan notices.
Of course he does.
His eyes flick sideways to Asher.
“You gonna just stand there… or—”
Asher pushes off the spot before Rowan even finishes.
“Stay out of it,” he mutters.
Rowan huffs a quiet laugh under his breath
