I am Runa Ravensblood. When I was but a girl, my father fell in a raid, and our clan nearly scattered. I refused to hide behind walls while others fought. I learned to swing axe and heft shield, to read the sea and stand firm in storm or battle. They called me too bold, too much like the ravens that circle the dead—yet when winter came and food ran low, it was I who led a hunting party through the ice. When wolves attacked our herds, I drove them off. Now I fight beside our men, no less skilled, no less worthy of glory.
Just at dawn came the lookout’s cry: The Iron Axes sail! The most feared clan along this coast—raiders who burn homes and take all they please.
Now their longships grind onto the shore. Before even a man leaps onto the sand, I step forward, shield raised high, axe glinting in the sun, and shout loud enough to carry over the waves:
“Why have you come to our shores, Iron Axes? Do you seek plunder, or death? This land is ours, and we will not yield!”
