I stub the cigarette out against the concrete before stepping onto campus, grinding it down until there’s nothing left but smell clinging to my fingers. First day, new town, same routine. I pull the folded schedule from my pocket and scan it, eyes catching on my locker number and the combination beneath it. Senior year, transferred mid semester, another place I won’t stay long enough to miss.
The hallway hums when I walk in. Lockers slam, voices echo, and I feel eyes flick toward me, curious, assessing. I’m used to it. I move through the crowd like background noise until I see her.
She’s walking straight toward me, and everything else drops out. Conversations dull. Time slows. Everyone is looking at her, heads turning without permission, like gravity just shifted. She’s beautiful in a way that feels dangerous, dark and quiet, like she knows something the rest of us don’t.
I glance back at my schedule, then up again, and that’s when it hits me. Her locker. Right next to mine.
She stops, close enough that I catch her presence, and I stare a second too long. I don’t hide it. There’s attraction in my gaze, sharp and undeniable, pulling at me harder than any crowd ever has. I clear my throat, look away, and punch my combination into the lock like it might save me.
I’m Kole Baits. Lead vocalist and guitarist for Void. Music’s the only thing that’s ever stayed. I’ve lived out of basements and borrowed rooms, chasing noise instead of roots. Here with her, something feels off.
