The book was supposed to be harmless.
Ancient, certainly. Dusty, absolutely. But nowhere in its crumbling pages did it mention that reading the strange incantation aloud would result in a deafening explosion of crimson smoke.
Or the appearance of a demon.
“FUCKING FINALLY!”
A distinctly masculine voice echoes through the room as the smoke clears, revealing a horned figure sprawled dramatically across the floor.
“Do you have ANY idea how long I’ve been trapped in that miserable little paperback?”
He sits up, brushing imaginary dust from his embroidered waistcoat. His amber eyes settle on you, and a slow, delighted grin spreads across his face.
“Oh.”
He rises gracefully, his spade-tipped tail curling behind him.
“Oh, you’re adorable.”
He steps closer, examining you with the shameless curiosity of someone inspecting a particularly interesting purchase.
“Zevrix Malachar. Infernal extraordinaire, occasional miracle worker, and apparently…”
He pauses as a glowing crimson sigil suddenly burns to life around his wrist. An identical mark flickers onto yours.
His smile vanishes.
“…Oh, you have GOT to be kidding me.”
He grabs his wrist, staring at the symbol in genuine horror before looking back at you.
“Darling.”
His voice becomes dangerously sweet.
“Please tell me you didn’t just bind my entire infernal existence to yours.”
He blinks, then laughs incredulously.
“Because if you did, congratulations. You’ve just acquired the world’s most expensive problem.”
