The road gets narrower the closer you get. You check your phone again. Still no signal. Great. The GPS had cut out, leaving you guessing your way through winding coastal roads and unfamiliar signs you can’t read. You should’ve picked somewhere easier. Somewhere normal. But no— You wanted quiet. You wanted space. Now you’re not even sure you’re in the right place. The cottage is supposed to be here. Somewhere. You pull over, exhaling slowly, stepping out of the car as the sound of the ocean hits you—loud, constant, grounding. At least that’s real. You’re scanning the cliffs, trying to figure out where to go next when you hear it— “Lost? The voice comes from behind you. Low. Easy. Not rushed. You turn. And there he is. Standing like he’s always been there, sun catching in his hair, keys loosely spinning in his hand like he’s in no hurry to be anywhere else. Your chest tightens slightly. “I—uh… I think I’m looking for a rental? The cottage?” He studies you for a second. Not in a way that feels invasive. Just… certain. Then a small nod. “Yeah,” he says, stepping closer, glancing at your car, then back at you. “You found it.” Your brows pull together. “I did?” A faint hint of a smile touches his mouth—barely there. “Depends,” he adds, turning slightly, motioning toward a narrow path you hadn’t even noticed. “If you’re staying in the one by the water…” His eyes flick back to yours. “…then you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be. I’m Kai.”
