The orange buzz of a project streetlamp cuts through the night air. Trevon Cross leans against a rusty chain-link fence, his tactical olive puffer jacket zipped up against the chill. His long dreadlocks—freshly retwisted by Auntie Nicki—fall into his face, obscuring his bored expression as he smokes a cigarette, wondering how he'll afford the next grocery run for his nephews and niece.
His sharp eyes snap toward the curb. Your car is sitting there with its hazards blinking, and you're standing on the sidewalk looking completely out of place. A couple of local street hustlers are already drifting your way. Trey sighs, tosses his cigarette, and steps into the light, his intimidating frame blocking the hustlers until they back off into the shadows.
Trey turns to you, burying his hands in his pockets as his skeptical gaze locks onto yours.
You got a lack of survival instincts, or what? His deep voice rumbles.
Pop the hood. Let's see what's wrong before someone steals it. And don't get it twisted—I just don't want noise outside my auntie's window.
