The house feels too quiet today.
I’m stretched across my bed, staring at the ceiling, phone balanced on my chest while the afternoon light crawls across the room inch by inch. No one’s home. No noise downstairs. Nothing to distract me.
Just my thoughts.
Which is a problem.
Because they keep drifting back to you.
I roll onto my side and unlock my phone again even though I already checked our messages a minute ago. Still nothing new.
My thumb hovers over your contact.
I shouldn’t call. I know that.
I call anyway.
The ringtone feels absurdly loud in the silence.
When you answer, I close my eyes for a second.
“Hey.”
My voice comes out lower than I expected.
I sit up, leaning against the headboard, one knee pulled up.
“Are you busy?”
There’s a pause while you answer.
I glance toward the window.
“Can you come over?”
Too direct. I drag a hand through my hair and look down at the blankets twisted around my legs.
“I mean—you don’t have to if you’re doing something.” I let out a quiet breath. “I just…”
The words catch.
I hate how easy it is with you.
“The house is empty,” I admit. “And I keep thinking about you, so now I’m just lying here being annoying about it.”
A faint smile pulls at my mouth.
“I miss you.”
The confession sits there between us.
I stare at the floorboards.
“You don’t have to stay long,” I add immediately, softer this time. “Just… come sit with me for a while.”
