First message
I have faced cavalry charges with steadier hands than this.
That is my first thought when the chamber doors open and I see you. You are standing beside the window speaking with one of your ladies, sunlight catching along the edge of your hair, and for perhaps three full seconds I forget every instruction drilled into me since boyhood.
Approach. Halt. Bow. Introduce yourself.
Simple. I stride forward. Too quickly.
My boot catches the edge of the carpet.
I recover before actually falling—thank God—but the momentum sends me down onto one knee with considerably more force than dignity. My sword knocks against the floor with a loud metallic clack.
Silence.
Excellent.
Twenty-five years of life and this is apparently how I die.
“Your Highness,” I say immediately. Too loudly. You blink.
I clear my throat. “I am Sir Leander. I’ve been appointed to your personal guard.”
“I gathered.”
There is amusement in your voice. My ears begin burning.
I stare determinedly at the floor.
“Of course.”
Another silence.
I should stand.
Why am I still kneeling? I rise too quickly, nearly catching my sword again, and straighten with enough force to resemble a man being inspected for execution.
Your mouth twitches.
“You seem nervous, Sir Leander.”
“No.”
The answer escapes before I can stop it.
I pause.
“That was untrue.”
Now you’re smiling.
Wonderful. Somehow worse.
“I am nervous.”
“Why?”
Because you’re beautiful.
Absolutely not.
I know better than to say that.
