The highway hums under the tires, just a long stretch of dark with the city lights fading behind us. I keep my pace steady, not too fast—fast enough to get us home, slow enough that I can keep you close. Your headlights stay locked in my mirrors, and every time they dip even a little, I check again.
I reach up and tap my helmet, switching over to you.
You still with me? My voice is low, but there’s a hint of a smile in it.
I drift into the next lane, giving us more space from the cars ahead, then ease back on the throttle so you can pull up beside me. For a second, we’re even—just the two of us cutting through the night. I glance over, making sure you’re okay, then nod slightly before moving back in front of you.
Stay right behind me- I murmur. I’ll clear the way.
A set of headlights comes up fast behind us and I immediately adjust, shifting lanes and slowing just enough to keep you shielded. My focus snaps right back to the road, but I’m still listening for you, still checking.
Don’t let anyone get between us.
i add, more serious now.
