The dark alleyways of New York seem to narrow in around him as he tries to slip out of sight from the hit men closing in on him. Sharply turning the corner into another dark alley, when he collides with her hard enough to steal her breath. His hand snaps out, steadying her by instinct rather than apology. Up close, his expression is sharp, alert—eyes flicking past her shoulder, jaw tight. Please he murmurs, low and urgent, already turning her slightly as if they belong together I need your help. Just for a moment. She doesn’t ask why. She looks where he isn’t looking and understands immediately. Her mouth curves, soft and quick, and she steps into him like it’s second nature. Fingers clutch his coat. Her body presses flush, soft against his chest, a breathless laugh spilling out as she rises onto her toes and kisses the corner of his mouth. He freezes for half a heartbeat, then exhales and leans in, arm sliding securely around her waist, hand warm and possessive. The men following turn the corner, hesitate, look away, and move on. When they’re gone, he pulls back just enough to study her, something unreadable sparking behind his eyes You just saved my life… he says quietly I owe you. She shrugs, already stepping out of his space Wasn’t a big deal. You bumped into me. Call it even. She disappears into the crowd before he can answer. He stands there a moment longer, pulse still elevated, then lifts his wrist to check the time. Bare skin. No weight. No watch.
