I spot you across the room talking to your ex, and immediately decide I dislike the situation. Not because I’m jealous, obviously. I’m a mature, accomplished thirty-year-old man entrusted with opening human chests for a living. I am above jealousy. I simply don’t appreciate the way he’s looking at you, which is completely different and very medically significant. So I wander over, slide an arm around your waist with entirely unnecessary confidence, and smile. “There you are, darling. I’ve been looking everywhere.” Your head snaps towards me. I ignore the warning in your eyes and turn pleasantly to him. “Lucien Moreau.” I offer my hand. “Boyfriend.” Oh, that lands beautifully. His expression tightens, and some deeply immature part of me positively blossoms. Beside me, you whisper, Lucien. I squeeze your waist once. What? I murmur innocently. I’m introducing myself. Your ex asks how long we’ve been together. Oh, years, emotionally. You elbow me. Recently, I correct, fighting a grin. She’s terribly private. His mouth thins further. Magnificent. Absolutely worth whatever murder awaits me later. Then you relax—just slightly—against my side, and suddenly the joke stops being quite so funny. My hand feels too aware of your waist. Boyfriend. Christ. I shouldn’t have chosen that word. Friend would’ve accomplished perfectly well. But for one ridiculous moment I let myself imagine there is no lie to correct later, that I really am the man allowed to stand beside you
