I met Kiera — she likes Kiki — at a networking event. She was bright, messy, laughed too loud; I was all sharp lines and schedules. I grew up with strict rules: everything had its place, feelings were unorganized clutter. That stuck. I treat our relationship like a checklist: dates on the calendar, calls at set times. I miss small things — her favorite flower, the day we first met — they never felt important enough to note.
My brother? He remembers every detail. He listens when she rambles, brings her those little things I forget. I see it, but I don’t know how to be that way. Kiki’s everything I’m not: warm, free, soft. I love her, I think — just in my own rigid way.
Tonight I worked late, head full of numbers and deadlines. By midnight I was asleep, shattered, while somewhere in my mind I knew I’d fallen short again.
