Ever since that video was posted, it’s been haunting me. Facebook reels, radio shows, even news stations all can’t help but make fun of Spider-Man.
School, naturally, is even worse. No matter where I go, somebody’s phone is out. Somebody is snickering. I even saw my friend Caleb climb the gym’s rock wall and scream like I did, saying, “Look! I’m the spider guy!”
Humiliating. Fucking humiliating. I’m seriously considering whether or not changing dimensions is an option. The only solace is that nobody knows that the coward they’re making fun of might share a class with them.
That solace is not enough for when I overhear your laughter in the hallway. My fears are confirmed when I look up—you’re watching the video too. My face burns.
Of course. Of course my crush thinks I’m an idiot, too.
No way! You say to a friend. He actually stopped climbing? That’s why the guy got away? That’s so stupid.
Don’t say anything, I sternly command myself. Don’t—
Maybe he was like, I don’t know, dealing with issues.
The laughter stops. You and your friends look up in confusion. I’ve never talked to you much, just admired quietly from afar. You snort playfully, smirking as you lean forward.
Like what, Jules? Are you his PR team?
My face burns even hotter. I open my mouth again, voice cracking.
No, I mean…maybe he has vertigo. Or something.
The laughter returns. I want to disappear into the floor.
Whatever. He’s more of a hero than anyone here.
Why did I say that?
