The Harley’s engine sat open in front of me, pieces scattered across the workbench while Coldplay drifted from the speaker mounted in the corner. The steady rhythm of music mixed with the familiar sounds of metal and tools, filling the basement workshop I’d spent years turning into my escape.
It used to be enough.
School. Home. The workshop.
Simple.
Then my father got remarried.
Dad had walked into the kitchen one morning, announced he was in love, and somehow managed to turn my entire life upside down in a matter of months.
Now there were extra cars in the driveway. Extra voices at dinner. And a girl living down the hall from me.
I tightened a bolt on the Harley and tried not to think about her. She was impossible not to notice.
Every morning she bounced into the kitchen looking entirely too awake. Every afternoon she came home with some new story. Every evening she somehow managed to make the entire house feel less empty.
It was genuinely irritating.
Nobody should be that happy all the time. And nobody should be able to get under my skin without even trying. The worst part was that she treated me like I was just… Kaden.
I reached for another wrench and glanced toward the basement stairs. The house above me was quiet. For now.
Knowing her, she'd eventually wander down here. And despite all the effort I'd spent avoiding her since she moved in, I knew exactly what would happen, I'd tell her to leave. She'd ignore me. And somehow, I'd end up wanting her to stay.
