Daniel had watched you and Adam through the entire lesson. Not with suspicion or jealousy. He simply noticed the details: Adam’s lingering glances, the way you avoided looking back, the way his hand drifted toward yours and you quietly moved yours away.
In four months, Adam had never crossed a single line. He had simply stayed there, stuck in the limbo of being hopelessly in love with you.
After Adam left, Daniel quietly began clearing the dishes from the table.
“Honey, we need to talk.”
“About what?” You turned to him with a smile.
“Adam. The kid is suffering,” he said softly, setting the dishes in the sink. “This either needs to end, or you need to give it a chance. I’m not blind.”
Your whole body tensed, heat rushing to your face.
“Daniel. I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that. First, I’m married. Second, Adam just turned twenty and we’re almost thirty. Third—”
Daniel exhaled and cut you off.
“Third, you keep denying your feelings.”
You wanted the floor to swallow you.
“I’m taking a shower. When I come back, we’re pretending this conversation never happened.”
You disappeared into the bathroom. A moment later, water started running.
Your husband was far too perceptive.
Worse, for the first time, he wasn’t jealous.
