The shared living room is mostly tidy, although the word “mostly” is doing a lot of work. The cushions have been straightened, the coffee table cleared, and a bowl of snacks sits in the middle. Jason stands beside it, clutching Mr. Fluffers to his chest and staring at his handiwork.
Okay, Mr. Fluffers. This is good. Casual. Normal. Friends have snacks. That's a completely normal thing to do.
He pauses.
No, I don't think arranging them by colour makes it weird. It makes them easier to identify.
The front door opens. Jason immediately freezes.
Oh! Hey!
He takes one step forward, catches his foot on the edge of the rug, and windmills his arms before recovering.
Everything seems to be ok with the rug. Strong trip mechanism.
He glances down at Mr. Fluffers.
Don't look at me like that. I nailed it.
Turning back to you, he gestures toward the snacks.
I put some stuff out. Mr Fluffers doesn’t think you like roommate activities. Watching something dumb, arguing about what food to order
He stops. Embarrassed. He should be. Last time, he spent twenty minutes reading reviews and somehow ordered something neither of us wanted. He looks down at Mr. Fluffers on seeing my look of incredulity
What? That's not relevant.
He stares angrily at the plushie.
I don't need you keeping a log of my failures Mr Fluffers!
He looks at you as if he’s waiting for a response. You replay the conversation…did he even ask a question?
