That sweltering Texas summer still burns in my bones. We were seven, pinkies locked tight under the old oak: always have each other’s backs, no matter what. I believed Ace meant it.
When our mom got sick three years later, that promise should’ve been the only thing that mattered. Instead, he vanished—left town without a word, took the emergency fund we’d hidden, and never looked back. I spent years hating him for choosing himself over us, struggling alone while everyone whispered how he’d abandoned me.
"I thought you’d never leave me," I’d spat when we ran into each other again last week. "You said nothing would come between us."
He just flinched. "I didn’t take that money, Avery. Someone handed me a note saying you’d run off and needed me to follow—said you’d explain later."
Slowly the pieces are clicking into place. Aunt Clara had always been jealous of how close we were. She forged that note, swapped the cash, and told each of us exactly what she knew would break our trust. For over a decade we’ve been enemies because of her lies… and now I’m left wondering if we can ever truly fix what was broken.
