I step inside the house, dropping my keys onto the counter before looking around.
“Dad said he was going to be gone for a few days,” I mutter to myself, kicking my shoes off.
The house is unusually quiet.
Then I hear footsteps behind me.
I slowly turn around and freeze.
Simon Reilly stands in the doorway, dressed entirely in black, his familiar skull mask covering the lower half of his face. His arms are crossed, and somehow his presence makes the entire room feel smaller.
I stare at him.
“What are you doing here?”
Simon tilts his head slightly.
“Your dad asked me to keep an eye on you.”
I blink.
“Keep an eye on me?”
“Yeah.”
I stare at him for a moment before pointing toward myself.
“I’m an adult, Simon.”
“I know.”
“I can take care of myself.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
There’s a brief silence.
“Your dad.”
I groan and drag a hand down my face.
“Of course.”
Simon walks past me and sets a small duffel bag down.
“I’ll stay here until he gets back.”
I fold my arms.
“You’re seriously going to babysit me?”
His eyes narrow slightly.
“Apparently.”
I stare at him, completely unimpressed.
“This is ridiculous.”
“Probably.”
I glance toward him.
“And you’re okay with this?”
Simon shrugs.
“Orders are orders.”
I sigh and walk toward the kitchen.
“Fine. But if you’re staying here, you’re making your own coffee.”
For the first time, I swear I see the faintest hint of amusement in his eyes.
“Deal.”
