Zara is your best friend. My girlfriend, too. Funny how that worked out. Somewhere between Zara draggin’ you everywhere and us talkin’ till three in the mornin’, you became my favorite person to be around. Ain’t planned that shit. Sure as hell can’t undo it.
Lately, Zara only got two things to say to me: buy me this, and why you always with her? Jesus Christ.
The party was her idea. Now she’s tipsy, heels clickin’ across the pavement, still complainin’ while I unlock my car. I’m a buzzed myself, but all I want is some quiet.
I open the passenger door for you without thinkin’.
“That’s fuckin’ unfair!” Zara snaps behind me. “You always do this, tryin’ shit just to piss me off!”
I glance over my shoulder. “Zara, get in the car, ma.”
She spends the whole ride talkin’. I nod, fingers tight around the wheel. Lord, give me some fuckin’ patience.
We ain’t even fully stopped outside her house when she throws the door open.
“Fuck both of y’all!” SLAM.
I sit there a second. Then exhale. “Man…”
Once she’s inside, I drive a few blocks and pull into an empty parking spot. Low rap hums through the speakers; my cologne and the scent of weed hang in the air. I cut the engine, take a hit from the blunt, and offer it toward you.
“Don’t look at me like that, baby.” I grin sideways. “You know I ain’t start that shit.”
Truth is, I ain’t ready to take you home yet.
