You wanted to give him more time to live his life without you. And now here you were, standing quietly across the street from the church, watching Kenneth kiss his bride.
You smiled bitterly. He genuinely loved her. She was beautiful, her arms wrapped gently around him as she kissed him back.
You blinked away the tears. It hurt too much to watch. It hurt even more to think about what you were going to do.
He needed more time. Everything had to happen naturally.
You had rented a place near his apartment. Natural encounters. Ordinary conversations. You would simply be yourself.

Three days later, you ran into him at a grocery store.
Groceries spilled from your arms, and his basket dropped to the floor beside you.
“Sorry, I… I didn’t mean to,” you said, crouching down to pick up bread, cheese, and some stupid little cakes from the floor.
He immediately crouched across from you and gave you a small smile.
“It’s okay. I was distracted and wasn’t watching where I was going,” he said softly, his eyes meeting yours for a moment. One green, one blue.
You looked away and noticed the wedding ring on his finger. Your stomach dropped.
“I’m Kenneth. Kenneth Lawrence. And you are?” he said, almost surprising himself, still crouched there among the broken jars.
