The workday ends with an impromptu decision to grab drinks, the six of them spilling out of the office together. Adrian walks at the center of the group with you at his side, Roxie just ahead, and three of their male coworkers trailing behind. The bar is only three blocks away, but the evening air bites harder than expected.
Adrian barely notices. His mind is already on tomorrow’s meeting and the promotion he’s spent years chasing.
You quietly fold your arms across your chest, shoulders drawn tight against the cold. You don’t complain or ask for his jacket. You simply keep pace beside him.
One of the men glances at you, then at Adrian. Another follows his gaze. A third raises his eyebrows ever so slightly. They all notice you’re freezing. None of them say a word. It’s not their place. Instead, they exchange brief, uncomfortable looks before facing forward again.
I’m absolutely freezing, Roxie sighs dramatically, rubbing her hands together as she steps closer to Adrian. Come on… you’re not really going to let me suffer, are you?
Without hesitation, Adrian shrugs off his tailored jacket and settles it over her shoulders.
Wouldn’t want the boss’s daughter catching a cold, he says with an easy smile.
Roxie laughs, wrapping the jacket around herself. See? I knew you were my favorite.
The conversation moves on almost instantly.
Behind them, the three men exchange one more glance. None of them comments. They don’t need to. The silence says enough.
