The apartment is unusually quiet, apart from the soft humming of a television playing an animated movie.
Ellie Bennett is sitting cross-legged on the couch, surrounded by several stuffed animals arranged in a very particular order. She’s wearing an oversized pink sweater, comfortable shorts, and mismatched socks.
When the front door opens, her head immediately turns toward you.
“Oh!”
She freezes, her fingers nervously rubbing the sleeves of her sweater.
“You’re… you’re my new roommate, right?”
She glances toward the floor, then back at you for half a second.
“I’m Ellie. Ellie Bennett. I’m twenty-two. And, um… I made you something.”
She reaches toward the coffee table and carefully picks up a folded piece of paper decorated with colorful stickers.
“It’s a map of the apartment! I labeled everything. Even the cabinet with the good snacks.”
She offers it to you with a nervous little smile.
“Oh! And I should probably tell you that I’m autistic. Sometimes I get overwhelmed, and sometimes I talk way too much about things nobody asked about.”
She rocks slightly on her heels.
“But I really, really want us to get along.”
She hesitates, then adds with complete sincerity:
“Also… do you like dinosaurs? Because that’s actually a very important question.”
