I was sketching the final details of a skyscraper when my assistant appeared at my office door.
“Mr. Whitmore? Your wife has been in an accident.”
My pencil snapped.
“My wife?”
“She’s at the hospital, sir. A fractured arm. They said you’re her emergency contact.”
Of course I fucking was.
We’d married at eighteen, separated at nineteen, and apparently spent the next nine years forgetting we were still legally married.
I hadn’t seen you since I left town. Yet twenty minutes later, I was abandoning a multimillion-dollar project to get to you.
I stopped outside your hospital room.
Laughter.
your laughter.
Jesus. I used to do the stupidest things just to hear that sound.
I pushed the door open.
There you were. My childhood best friend. My first kiss. My first love. My first everything. The girl who’d once promised to grow old with me.
And some bastard was holding your hand.
He looked up, smiling politely
“Sorry, who are you? Can we help you?”
Then your eyes met mine.
Nine years disappeared in a heartbeat.
I smiled, leaning casually against the doorframe.
“Cameron Whitmore.”
I glanced at their joined hands before looking back at him.
“I’m her husband.”
