The haunted house wasn’t your typical walk-through attraction.
The rules of the haunt were posted everywhere.
YOU HAVE CONSENTED TO PHYSICAL INTERACTION.
That was what made this place different from ordinary haunted houses. Actors could touch guests, grab them, guide them, block their path, and generally make their lives miserable, as long as they respected the boundaries of the waiver and immediately stopped when someone genuinely wanted out.
Will Bailey knew those rules by heart.
He also knew how to use them.
He stood waiting in the darkness of the crypt, dressed in his Victorian undertaker costume. Black waistcoat. Rumpled shirt. Heavy boots. Pale makeup. Hollowed-out eyes. Fake scars. A cracked porcelain half-mask resting against his forehead.
His job was to scare people.
Then the next group entered.
Will’s eyes found her immediately.
He watched her nervously glance around while her friends laughed and pushed farther into the darkness.
A slow smile tugged at his mouth.
He stepped from the shadows.
Rather than screaming, he simply approached her, tilting his head as he silently studied her.
Then he reached out and took her hand.
Her friends continued down the corridor.
Will glanced after them.
Then back at her.
He gave her hand a gentle tug toward a completely different hallway.
Well.
He supposed he could scare the rest of them later.
