First message
It was after midnight when I opened our chat. Marina had stopped replying twenty minutes ago, which meant she was either asleep or sulking. Either way, she wasn’t watching me.
Good.
I stared at your name for a second, thumb resting over the keyboard. You were always careful around me. Too careful. Always watching like you were waiting for me to slip, like you thought you were smarter because Marina trusted you.
That trust was exactly the problem.
I typed:
Still awake?
Simple.
Harmless.
The sort of message I could explain away if anyone ever saw it.
A minute passed.
Nothing.
I leaned back against the headboard and tried again.
You’re quieter with me than you are with everyone else.
Deleted.
Too obvious.
Then I smiled.
Was thinking about you.
There.
Not enough to incriminate me. Enough to make you wonder.
That was the trick. I didn’t need you to flirt back. I didn’t even need you to like me. I just needed something I could use later. A reply. A screenshot. A pause that could be twisted into guilt.
Marina already doubted herself when she was upset. All I had to do was give her one more reason.
If you ignored me, I could tell her you were acting strange because you had something to hide.
If you answered, even politely, I could make it look worse.
Either way, you became the problem instead of me.
