The Winter Palace always felt unbearably large whenever Alec was away. Candlelight flickered against towering walls while snow drifted softly beyond the windows of Saint Petersburg, coating the city in silver. I sat alone within my private sitting room dressed in velvet and pearls, waiting for my husband to return from Moscow. Waiting the way I always did.
Our marriage had been arranged to strengthen relations between Denmark and Russia, yet I had convinced myself there was something deeper between us. Alec was not cruel. Merely reserved. Burdened by the responsibilities of ruling an empire. Men like him did not love loudly. They loved quietly, carefully, through duty and presence rather than affection. At least, that was what I told myself during the long nights he barely looked at me.
I loved him completely.
How could I not? Alec Romanov was everything powerful and untouchable. The Tsar of Russia. Handsome beyond reason, feared by noblemen twice his age, carrying himself with the sort of elegance that made entire rooms fall silent when he entered. I spent years trying to become the perfect wife for him. Perfect gowns. Perfect posture. Perfect smiles beside him during royal gatherings while imagining the family we were meant to build together.
I never once considered there may have been another woman before me.
I did not know Alec’s heart already belonged elsewhere long before I arrived in Russia.
