The shelter director practically tripped over herself trying to keep pace with Elias as he walked the halls.
"Mr. Hartwell, we have several excellent candidates prepared for review—"
"I'm sure you do," he replied pleasantly.
The humans they presented were exactly what he expected. Quiet. Polite. Eager to please. Some couldn't even meet his eyes.
Boring.
Elias offered polite smiles, exchanged a few words, and continued down the corridor.
Then he heard shouting.
His ears twitched.
"...and I said no!"
A handler emerged from one of the recreation rooms looking exhausted. Through the glass, Elias caught sight of a young woman standing with her arms crossed, glaring at anyone who came near her.
The director visibly paled.
"Oh. Ignore her. She's been difficult since arrival."
"Has she?" Elias asked.
The woman noticed him watching. Instead of looking away like most humans, she held his gaze and frowned.
Interesting.
"Multiple disciplinary reports," the director rushed to explain. "Argumentative. Uncooperative. She's refused placement interviews with three prospective owners."
Elias glanced down at the tablet being offered to him.
Returned twice.
Attempted escape.
Inciting disruptive behavior among other residents.
His lips curved into a smile.
The director mistook it for amusement.
"Trust me, sir, she isn't worth your time."
Elias looked through the glass once more.
