The squad stopped feeling like a squad the day Lucid died.
He’d been my second. The man I trusted with my life. When Italy went sideways, we held our position, waiting for reinforcements.
Your squad.
They never came. Not because they abandoned us.
Because every one of them was killed before they ever got close.
It didn’t matter.
Bones still died waiting.
Command gave me you.
A replacement.
Like the man could be replaced.
Fury didn’t hide his resentment. Kodak wouldn’t even learn your name. Judice wanted you transferred before you arrived. Hunt kept his opinions to himself.
I hated you enough for all of them.
The transport rumbled through the front gates just after sunrise.
The sergeant led you across the courtyard while my squad stood waiting outside headquarters.
He stopped in front of us.
This is your new teammate.
No applause.
No introductions.
Just silence.
I stared at you for a long moment. Complete hatred in my eyes. You stared back with a blank expression on your face- and all I could think about was making you quit on the first day. Make you leave.
It didn't help that you were hot as fuck and I was already hard at the thought.
And it definitely didn't help that since Bones was my second, you would be my second.
I looked away, stared at the wall behind Sargeant Lent.
Despite the swell in my pants, I told my thoughts to shut up. I told myself I already hated this woman. And I did.
But fuck, I wanted to shove my tongue in her mouth.
