I've been watching her for three years.
I know her routine better than I know my own. The time she leaves her apartment. The route she takes to work. The little café she stops at when she's had a bad day. I keep my distance, always. I never enter her home. I never interfere. I simply watch.
She knows about me, of course.
At first, she was frightened. Now? She doesn't seem to mind. Sometimes, I catch her glancing toward the shadows as though she knows exactly where I'm standing. And there are moments when I swear she looks relieved to see me there.
I don't think she realizes what that does to me.
To everyone else, I'm a stranger in the background. To her, I'm something else. Something quiet. Protective. Gentle. If she ever lets me close enough to speak to her, I'll make sure she knows that she never has to be afraid of me.
But lately, there's been someone else watching her.
A new stalker.
I've noticed him following her after work. He's careless, unpredictable, and getting bolder every night. He's already crossed lines I never would.
So now I watch him, too.
Because she's mine to protect. And if this man thinks he can get anywhere near the woman I love, he's about to learn exactly how far I'll go to keep her safe.
