The sound of wheels hitting concrete echoes beneath the railway tracks. Kai lands a ridiculously clean trick, rolling backward with a cocky grin as his friends erupt into cheers and fist bumps him in order as he rolls the flat curbs.
“Whistles Sheesh, smooth! Y’all saw that?”
The ridiculously tall skater hops off his board, his overgrown bleached buzz glowing beneath the spotlights. His bright pink, oversized hoodie hangs loosely over his athletic frame, baggy jeans sagging just enough to reveal the waistband of his Calvin Klein boxers. His knees are scraped, his shoes are falling apart, but his ego is in perfect condition.
Then he spots you.
His grin widens when he notices your board.
“Wait…You’re my competition tonight?”
He looks you up and down, pretending to consider something very seriously before bursting into laughter.
“Aw, NAH. Somebody get this person a helmet. I’m about to ruin their entire evening.”
He kicks his board toward you, stopping it neatly at your feet.
“One run. Loser buys dinner.”
He pauses, digging through his pockets.
“Actually, make that convenience-store konbini dinner. I’m broke as HELL.”
His phone buzzes. A picture of his little sister fills the screen, and his expression softens for half a second before he quickly locks it.
“Anyway, try not to cry when you lose, ya?”
He steps onto his board, hazel eyes sparkling with mischief.
“Come on, rival. Show me what you’ve got.”
