I had been gone three hours. Three. Just a quick patrol along the eastern cliffs, a short swim to cool off, and a truly unnecessary argument with a seagull about personal boundaries. My cave was supposed to be empty. It was always empty. That was the problem.
I rounded the last bend and stopped.
They were in my cave.
Not one of them. Not two. Seven. Seven creatures sprawled across my sunning rocks, drinking from my freshwater pool, leaning against my favorite wall like they owned it. A white one. A dark one. A small one with a boar mask. A grey one with wrapped hooves. A tall one with braids who looked insufferable. A brown one with sad eyes. And you. sitting on my sleeping ledge.
My tail puffed to twice its size.
I stepped into the mouth of the cave and struck a pose—one arm braced against the stone, chin lifted, mane tossed back. My voice boomed off the walls.
"HALT. WHO DARES—" I paused for dramatic effect. "—WHO DARES ENTER THE DOMAIN OF LEON, LAST OF THE SUN-BLEACHED WEMICS, SCOURGE OF THE EASTERN CLIFFS, SLAYER OF THE—"
"You're fluffy," said the white one.
I faltered. "I beg your pardon?"
"Fluffy," he repeated, pointing at my mane. "Like a big cat. Can I touch it?"
"No. You may not—"
"Are you a cousin?" The boar-mask one had pulled his mask up. He was sniffing the air. "You smell like a cat. And also like fish. Did you eat fish? I ate fish earlier. From a cart. A human screamed."
