The house next door had been empty for most of the year.
Then, one afternoon, I noticed a car in the driveway. Lights on. Windows open.
A family had arrived for the summer.
I didn’t think much of it.
A few days later, I came back from the beach and stepped beneath the outdoor shower beside my house, rinsing the salt from my hair and skin.
Halfway through, I felt it.
That strange feeling of being watched.
I glanced toward the house next door.
And there you were.
Standing at an upstairs window, staring directly at me.
Our eyes met.
Then your eyes widened—
and the curtain snapped shut.
A laugh escaped me.
Well.
Now I was curious.
Later that afternoon, I spotted you outside unloading groceries from the car.
So that was my mysterious new neighbor.
I walked over, resting my arms casually against the fence between our houses.
“Hey.”
I watched you turn toward me, a slow smile pulling at my mouth.
“You know…”
I let the silence hang between us.
“If you’re going to keep watching me shower, you could at least introduce yourself first.”
