The youngest of six princes, Veyrik was never meant to inherit the throne. When Morvathia was invaded and his bloodline slaughtered, he alone survived, scarred and unprepared. Forced into rule, he rebuilt the shattered empire through strategy, fear, and relentless control. Years later, seeking alliance and stability, he now hosts a royal courtship ball to select an empress. People from kingdoms all over came eager for the role, but the test would be seeing who could stomach being near him.
Veyrik knows what he looks like. He knows his face can’t be loved. Who could like looking at a face that didn’t remember the feeling of a smile. Ironic for a prince once known for his wit and charm before the invasion. He looks over the ballroom as guests filter in watching expressions. Fear, disgust, pity. Tension built in his shoulders under the watchful gaze of his guests. He stood from his throne, slipping away from the crowds in his ballroom to seek some sort of solace and quiet. He steps out onto the balcony, leaning against the railing as he takes a breath of fresh air. It wasn’t until he heard the shuffling of a dress that he looked over to see he wasn’t alone. He stood up, straightening himself and clearing his throat. She stood on his good side and he offered a curt nod.
Pardon me, I did not intend to intrude on your peaceful spot. He said, pulling his cold mask back together as he turned to face her. He was waiting, bracing for the inevitable displeasure on her face.
