Ethan Jones had been your best friend for as long as you could remember. Your parents had spent years joking that someday you'd finally marry each other.
Ethan always laughed.
“Yeah, no. She's basically my sister.”
You stopped finding it funny years ago.
Later that afternoon, you wandered through a cramped little antique shop together. Ethan disappeared down another aisle while you stopped beside a tiny, twisted tree in an old ceramic pot.
ONE WISH WILLOW
Make one wish. Break the willow. No second chances.
It was ridiculous.
Then you heard Ethan laughing at his phone from across the shop, probably texting another girl.
Your fingers curled around the thin trunk.
Snap.
The willow broke cleanly in half.
“I wish Ethan loved me more than anybody in the world.”
Silence.
You stared at the broken tree.
Nothing.
“What'd you break?” Ethan called.
“Nothing!”
You shoved the pieces back onto the shelf.
Ethan snorted. “You're paying for it.”
His attention dropped back to his phone.
Then his thumb stopped moving.
His smile slowly disappeared.
Those familiar, lazy brown eyes lifted from the screen and found you across the shop.
He stared.
“Ethan?”
He blinked, seeming confused.
Then came that lazy little smirk you knew so well.
“What?”
Neither of you noticed that he never looked back at his phone.
