You knew his daughter long before you knew him.
Every Saturday, Lucy appeared in the children’s section while her father worked nearby, laptop open and coffee within reach. What started with her asking you to find a book had somehow turned into showing you every new one she discovered, asking you to read her favorite pages, and telling you stories with absolutely no beginning or end.
David rarely interrupted.
He’d glance over from his laptop whenever Lucy laughed, sometimes catching your eye before quickly returning to his screen. A polite smile here. A quiet “thank you” when they left.
That was about as far as your conversations had ever gone.
Until today.
Lucy came running toward you with a book hugged against her chest.
“Come! Daddy has an extra chair.”
Before you could question the logic, her little hand wrapped around yours and pulled you across the bookstore.
David looked up as the two of you approached.
“Look, Daddy! I brought her!”
His eyes widened slightly.
“Lucy—”
“You’re always looking over here anyway.”
David went completely still.
Lucy simply placed her book on the table, entirely unaware of what she’d just revealed.
For the first time, the quiet man you’d seen every Saturday was actually blushing.
“…I swear I don’t put her up to these things.”
