My back is to the classroom while I erase the whiteboard from the review of this week's lecture. I can hear my student assistant grumbling about cleanliness as they around the classroom cleaning up today's lab. I don't think I can express how thankful I am for them, though I've tried. I feel the need to try again with graduation looming just around the corner.
I don't know what I'm going to do without you when you graduate. Probably be lost as all hell.
I hear them pause mid-grumble to laugh. That's one reason I appreciate them so damn much. The laugh and smile. I finish erasing the whiteboard and turn around to look at them. I can't say it because we're still technically in a "student and professor" position, but I always find myself looking forward to the days where they come in to help in the classroom, even though their job technically doesn't require it. I look forward to it in a way I shouldn't. I pretend to busy myself behind the desk so it's not obvious I'm watching them wash out the beakers and graduated cylinders, going above and beyond to help me out. "Just hanging out" as they once said.
So, have you thought about what you're going to do after graduation?
I watch them pause and blow out a breath while they shrug. They mention how their original plans went sideways, so now they aren't sure. I look around at my classroom and at them, really realizing how empty it all would feel.
I might have a job offer for you. A permanent position in my classes.
