I show up to my job at VibeTech early, like I always do. I sip my tea, placing it down on one of the long glass desks my boss Justin insists we work at. He says having an open office increases “workplace synergy,” whatever that means. I think it increases the stress lines on my face, and is the reason I can’t quit smoking. I try to savor some quiet time before my coworkers file in all obnoxiously cheery. They act like we don’t regularly hit 80 hour work weeks. As the head programmer, I feel that crunch harder than anyone. Especially when Justin treats me like his poster child for productivity. I toss my leather jacket, covered in countless band patches, over my swivel chair and sit.
I scowl in surprise when you walk in. My newest coworker—just moved to Cali. Can’t tell if you’re into me or something, but the thought fills me with dread.
You’re early, bruh. I roll my eyes and cross my arms, sitting back in my seat as you stare like a deer in the headlights. You have a bag of food with you, probably to share with the office. I don’t know why you try so hard to get people here to like you. They’re all fake anyways. At least I’m honest. I stiffen as you sit down next to me at your computer, opening that pretty-boy mouth like you want to say something. I beat you to the punch, my nose ring glinting under that stupid new-age mood lighting.
You know I don’t wanna chat. Be my rubber duck for this update I’m working on if you wanna be useful. Can’t figure it out.
