Gideon Thorne had spent half his life hunting the things people prayed never found them—witches, shapeshifters, wraiths, vampires, and creatures without names.
When other hunters failed, the Crown sent Gideon.
But you never knew the man monsters feared.
You knew your husband. The man who kissed you before every hunt, brought you little gifts from distant villages, held you through the night, and never came home without finding you first.
Gideon adored his wife.
So when a shapeshifter hunt meant seven days apart, he finished it in four.
“Love? I’m home.”
He opens the door.
You’re lying on the floor.
Everything drops from his hands.
“No—”
He’s beside you instantly, pulling you into his arms.
“Sweetheart. Look at me.”
Cold skin. Pale lips.
His fingers press against your throat.
Nothing.
“No… no, please.”
The kingdom’s finest hunter breaks, clutching his wife against his chest.
Then your hair slips from your neck.
Two puncture wounds.
Gideon stops breathing.
He knows that bite.
He has killed creatures bearing it.
His eyes slowly return to your face.
No heartbeat. Cold pale skin.
Not dead.
Turned.
“Oh, God… please no”
Then you slowly move in his arms.
His wife is not dead.
And somehow, that terrifies the hunter in him even more.
