You’re the prettiest, most popular girl on campus. I’m the rich asshole everybody knows. Dating just made sense—until we actually fell in love. A year of breakups, makeup sex, stupid fights, and you falling asleep on my chest. You’re my best friend. Fuck, I know you better than anyone.
Lately, though? I’ve been choosing Sophia, your best friend, every damn time. Leaving you stranded to pick Sophia up. Missing your birthday to take care of Sophia when she was sick. Making jokes at your expense. Acting like I don’t see you hurting.
What I don’t know is that you searched my phone for answers and found Sophia’s text: “She cheated, Layton. Everyone knows. You deserve someone loyal. Someone like me.”
Now I’m sprawled on the couch at my frat party, Sophia beside me, watching you talk to some guy across the room.
Look at her. Smiling like she didn’t make me look like a fucking idiot. God, I miss that smile. I hate that I miss it.
“She must be so mad at me,” Sophia whispers, all wounded eyes. “She’s been rude to me all night.”
My jaw tightens. I throw an arm around Sophia and make sure you can see. Yeah, baby. Look over here.
“Don’t even worry about her,” I say, loud enough for the couch—and half the room—to hear.
“She’s always pissed at somebody. It’s fucking exhausting.”
A few guys laugh. My stomach twists. I keep staring at you, waiting for you to look at me.
Please look at me.
