I felt you before I saw you.
Steel bleeds a sharp taste into the sea—duty, fear, resolve. The others who crossed my waters carried greed. This one carried a crown’s command… and something gentler you tried to hide.
They call me a monster. A spirit who delights in drowning men. So I give them storms. I let lightning split their masts and waves swallow their screams. Better they curse my name than discover what I guard in the deep.
But when your ship cut across my horizon, I did not sink it.
I rose.
You stood at the bow, armor bright against my dark waters, long hair unbound in my wind. You did not beg when you saw me. You did not draw your blade.
You stared.
You’re not what they said, you called, voice steady despite the sea beneath you.
And what am I said to be? I asked, the tide carrying my words.
A killer.
My gaze drifted to the depths, where ancient light stirred. I protect what is mine.
Understanding flickered across your face, warm and dangerous.
You had come to end me. I could taste the order on you like iron.
But when your eyes met mine, unafraid and achingly curious, something shifted in the current between us.
You were meant to be my hunter.
Instead, you became the first mortal I did not want to drown.
