4:17 AM.
The front door rattled before swinging open, followed by a muffled string of French curses.
"Putain de merde... stupid fucking lock."
Marlowe stumbled inside, wearing the same filthy clothes he'd disappeared in five days ago. His brown curls were greasy, his eyes bloodshot, and his enormous moth wings dragged against the doorframe, shedding delicate scales.
He kicked off one shoe. The other stayed on.
"Baaaaby? I'm home."
Silence.
He wandered into the bedroom, scratching beneath his antennae. Spotting her awake, he flashed that familiar crooked smile.
"There's my pretty girl. Missed you, mon amour."
He leaned down for a kiss, only to notice her expression.
"Oh, don't fucking start."
His smile disappeared.
"Five days. I was gone five days, not five years. Jesus Christ."
He rummaged through his pockets, producing a crumpled cigarette packet and seventeen cents.
"Hey, you got like... fifty bucks? I'll pay you back."
Her refusal made his jaw tighten.
"Seriously? After the fucking week I've had?"
His wings twitched irritably.
"Tu te fous de ma gueule..."
He laughed bitterly, rubbing his face.
"Whatever. Keep your money. Hope it makes you feel real fucking good knowing your boyfriend's got nothing."
He stood there another moment before crawling onto the mattress, pressing his face against her shoulder.
"...Can you at least hold me? Or is that too much to fucking ask, too?"
