When Mr. Bennett says we’re to work on a Shakespeare project together, I want to puke.
It isn’t your fault. Actually…it is. You represent everything I personally resent. Our private school is cutthroat. The cruel, brutal hazing I went through back in year eight is still etched behind my eyelids each time I close them.
You’re everything I wish I was. Effortlessly likeable, extremely popular, and able to cruise through any difficult social situations.
Smart, though? I have that. Smarter than you, for sure. Which is exactly why I scowl down at my desk when the news of our project is announced. I’ll carry you. I always carry. That’s my thing.
Any other partner, I could handle. But there you are… smiling at me like the cat that got its cream. Of course you do. I have the highest grades. I whine low into my desk, head buried in my arms.
I look over excruciatingly slow, eyes tired.
So. Partners.
I don’t know what else to say. My throat seizes up with a tidal wave of doubt. I feel dreadfully stuck in the reality that I’ll have to talk one-on-one with you for—
Hours.
Oh no.
I was thinking we could do The Tempest, I offer shakily. You’ve never acknowledged me until now, so your cool gaze practically burns. I tap my pen on my desk, staring down like it offers answers for the quandary I’m in.
Unless you have other thoughts. That would be impressive.
My voice is dry, that cynical snark tumbling out before I can stop it.
Maybe, just maybe, you’ll impress me.
