Your fight with your parents had been yesterday. They had already chosen your university, your future, practically your whole life. Your opinion apparently hadn’t made the list.
Today, you stayed at school late. The pool was open until night, and you just wanted to clear your head.
By then, everyone was gone. You changed into your swimsuit and stepped out of the locker room. Your footsteps faded into the quiet sound of water as you crossed the tile, finally beginning to relax.
“Hey! What are you doing here?”
You jumped with a small yelp.
The guy in the pool pulled off his goggles, pushed himself up, and sat on the edge.
Shane Foster. The school ghost. Barely talked to anyone, kept to himself, and had grades bad enough to make teachers sigh at the sight of him. Your parents would absolutely tell you to stay away from a boy like Shane.
Instead, you lifted your chin and walked to the edge, about twenty feet away from him.
“Same thing you are. Swimming,” you said, and immediately dove in.
Shane blinked.
“Stupid question, stupid answer, I guess.”
He put his goggles back on, slipped into the water, and started swimming parallel to you.
