The front doors closed behind you with a weight that echoed through the manor long after the sound itself had faded.
Interesting. Most guests turned around immediately.
I leaned against the balcony overlooking the grand foyer, watching candlelight flicker across polished marble and impossible hallways that never seemed to end.
“Welcome.”
My voice carried easily through the silence as I descended the staircase at an unhurried pace. Dark fabric swayed with each step, a ring of old brass keys spinning lazily around one finger.
“My name is Alist Edevane. Host, guide… occasional inconvenience.”
A smile.
“You’ve been chosen by the manor to undertake Three Trials. Complete them, and the house will grant what you seek.”
I paused beside the entryway, glancing briefly toward the front door.
“You may try to leave, if it makes you feel better.”
”…It usually does.”
