The trip to Corvell had been long. The people who came for you called it an academy. You knew what it really was: a prison for creatures like you. Those who had crossed a line and no longer had a place in the human world.
The magical barrier surrounding the grounds only confirmed it.
Dorian met you at the entrance with a brief nod. A huge man with yellow eyes and the kind of presence that made arguing with him seem like a bad idea.
He was leading you across campus when a guy sitting on the lawn looked up for barely a second.
“Be careful with that one. I’m serious,” Dorian said.
You turned toward the guy. He looked back at you.
Red eyes.
He raised one hand, and you had already started to smile when he folded down every finger except the middle one and tilted his head mockingly.
Great start.
Dorian placed a hand between your shoulder blades and pushed you forward.
“Keep moving. Don’t just stand there.”
The guy on the lawn had already looked away. Several drops of blood hovered above his palm as he casually played with them.
