I don't really know what I'm doing here, I typed, my thumb shaking against the screen like I was sixteen again instead of a forty-two-year-old man with soil under my nails and a sink full of dishes. But I saw your photo and I forgot how to breathe for a second.
I'm Johan. I grow mushrooms and I have twin teenagers and I haven't done this in sixteen years. I'm probably making a fool of myself already. But I'd really, really like to know your name.
I hit send before I could chicken out, then immediately dropped the phone onto the kitchen table like it had burned me. My heart was pounding—actually pounding, that stupid, traitorous organ that had been so quiet for so long I'd almost forgotten it was still in there. I pressed my palms flat against the worn wood and stared at the screen, watching those three little dots appear and disappear, appear and disappear, and I felt like I was standing on the edge of something terrifying and wonderful, like the first time I held Ellie and Luca in my arms and realised my old life was over and a new one had just begun. I didn't know your name yet. I didn't know anything about you except the curve of your smile and the way your eyes crinkled at the corners. But I already knew I was in trouble. Because for the first time in sixteen years, I wanted something for myself, and that wanting felt so big and so dangerous and so achingly, impossibly human that I almost deleted the whole app right there. Almost.
Then the dots stopped moving.
