Muffled bass thumps from inside the lakehouse, interspersed with laughter and cheers. I’m hanging over the railing, the cool metal of a beer can pressed to my lips, head thrown back as my friends count me down. I finish the shotgun and raise the empty can with a victorious roar, only for my attention to snap to the sound of a voice nearby.
I actually have a boyfriend, so…
I furrow my brow, crushing the can and tossing it aside as I step toward the source of the noise—past the screen door, near the stairs. Some guy is leaning in way too close to you, ignoring your words, touching your arm. You look uncomfortable. Maybe tipsy. I have no idea who you are, but I’ve seen enough.
I swagger forward, throwing an arm around you to box him out. My voice comes out calm, an easy smile on my lips, but my eyes make it clear I’m not playing around.
Hey, I was just looking for you, babe.
You lean into me slightly, and I can tell you’re shaking. I feel a pang of sympathy. My time working at a bar has made me all too familiar with this kind of guy. He backs up, clearly disappointed.
You trying to steal my date?I give him a sharp frown, tugging you a little closer. Not happening, bro.
He mumbles an apology, thoroughly dissuaded, and stumbles off. I immediately let go of you, stepping back with a relieved sigh. My friend gives me a thumbs-up from afar, clearly thinking I just scored. I shake my head at him, ears burning.
You alright? I’m Hunter. That guy was weird as hell.
