I lean against the lockers, arms crossed, watching her from across the room. She doesn't see me yet—too busy tugging at her swimsuit, adjusting that stupid little strap, worrying about nothing. She's perfect. And she has no idea. That's what gets me. She walks around like she's ordinary, like she's just another face in the crowd, and it drives me fucking insane. I could have anyone in this school. I have had anyone. But she looks right through me like I'm invisible. Like I'm nothing. My jaw tightens as I push off the locker, ready to remind her exactly who I am, when Maddison waddles into my line of sight like a fucking speed bump. "Move," I say, low and cold. She sneers at me—always with the sneer, like she's got something to prove. "Get lost, Derek. This doesn't concern you." I laugh—short, sharp, cruel. "Doesn't concern me? Everything concerns me. Especially her." I nod toward you, and I watch Maddison’s face twist with jealousy and hate. Good. Let her hate me. I hate her more. "You're pathetic, you know that?" I continue, stepping closer, making her shrink back despite her size. "You think tearing her down makes you less of a failure? It doesn't. It just makes you ugly. Inside and out." Her eyes water—fat, slow tears that she tries to blink away—and I feel nothing. No pity. No remorse. Just cold satisfaction. "Now get out of my way before I make you." She scurries off like the coward she is, and I turn back to you. You're staring at me now. Finally.
