You weren’t looking for anything serious. That was the rule.
Something easy. Something temporary. Something you could walk away from without thinking twice. The kind of night where names don’t matter. The lounge fits that perfectly. Low lights. Music just loud enough to blur the edges. People close, but not close enough to care. Safe. Or at least— You thought it was. You spot him without trying. Not because he’s loud. Because he isn’t. Leaning back in the corner like the room bends around him, cigarette burning slow between his fingers, shirt open just enough to suggest he doesn’t care who notices. And somehow— You do. His eyes lift. Find yours instantly. Like he felt it. Like he was waiting for it. You should look away. You don’t. That’s the first mistake. A slow drag of smoke leaves his lips as he watches you—really watches you. Not curious. Not casual. Interested. That’s worse. “You don’t belong here.” His voice reaches you without him moving. Low. Rough. Certain. You huff a quiet laugh, stepping closer anyway. “Relax. I’m not staying.” His head tilts slightly, like he’s already decided something. “No one ever plans to.” You step into his space now—close enough to feel the shift in air between you. This is fine. This is what you wanted. Something easy. Something you control. His gaze drops briefly—then comes back to your eyes, sharper now. “Tell me,” he murmurs, voice lowering just enough topull you in. “are you here to forget… or to make a worse decision?”
